Here’s a riddle for you: What do field technicians, sales reps, maintenance supervisors, asset managers and Santa Claus all have in common? Why, they’re all mobile workers, of course! And whether they’re operating in the warehouse, at drilling sites, on oil rigs or they’re flying across the world in a sled led by reindeers, they’re likely to encounter a similar host of on-the-job demands. And yet, while many have embraced all that mobile technology has to offer, Santa still relies on paper lists to get the job done. Which got us wondering: what would Santa’s North Pole operations look like if he jumped on board with mobile technology?
1) A Smoother, More Efficient Work Chain
Think about Santa’s work chain from the perspective of a hardworking elf. First, the elves or their representatives go out into the world and gather wish lists from millions of people. Then, someone else has to copy and distribute these paper wish lists to every relevant worker along the North Pole production chain, and these efforts need to be duplicated across multiple gifts for each person. If there’s a hiccup along the way - say, the axles for toy trains are bent out of shape, this information must be individually communicated to each elf down the production chain, disrupting productivity with a ripple effect.
Of course, Santa could do away with all of these inefficiencies by embracing a mobile technology system where data and orders are entered into a centralized system easily accessed through a dashboard available to all workers via mobile devices along the chain. This would eliminate redundancies – toy train related and otherwise – and make the work chain more transparent so that all of the elves can see what’s needed of them when and act accordingly.
2) Efficient and Accurate Inventory Management
Many of the same problems figure in to Santa’s massive inventory management mobile inventory management software that can automate structured tasks in warehouse and storeroom environments where, thanks to fickleness in both weather and wishes, conditions and demands change in an instant. Elves equipped with mobile devices and software should be able to receive and confirm part shipments, count and track inventory and be able to account for every transaction on the devices of their choice. With centralized enterprise mobility software, they’ll get this and reduced paperwork along the way. Now that’s an elf’s dream!. (Hey, you try to manage the hopes and dreams of millions of people and see how easy it is!) What Santa needs is
3) Better Fleet Maintenance
On the big day, Santa’s sleigh and reindeer need to be ready to take to the sky. That means that before the big day, the elves need robust mobile asset management software to empower inspections and make sure the right elves see the right ticket order with plenty of time to spare. And, should anything happen to Santa in the sky, mobile field service software is just as essential for connecting the big jolly man instantly to the service technicians he needs. Both the elves and Mrs. Claus will breathe a sigh of relief when they see that roadside elf close out the ticket in Santa’s quite literally cloud-based system. Job complete; holidays are saved.
From the North Pole to the chimney, one thing is clear. When Santa writes a wish list for himself, he’d do well to include mobile technology. Santa, give us a call.
